Man of Steel

January 10, 2004: Jim Lee Interviews Lee Bermejo

Jim Lee has conducted his own interviews over at the Newsarama website, this time interviewing artist Lee Bermejo. Here are a few excerpts from the interview...

Many fans know that Brian Azzarello and I (Jim Lee) are taking over the reins on Superman in April. What's still kind of quiet is the other Superman book Brian is writing, focusing more on all things Superman, from the viewpoint of Lex Luthor.

To be released this summer, the project is tentatively called Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and rejoins Brian Azzarello with multi-talented artistic dynamo Lee Bermejo bringing the Man of Steel title, albeit with realigned focus back into the Superman family of titles. Superman editor Eddie Berganza also had Lee redesign the look and feel of Metropolis to prep the entire line for the changes which begin this April.

JL: I know you spent a lot of time and research getting the new look for Metropolis down. What inspired you to make the changes and why did you make the choices you did? I notice a definite art deco streakŠ

LB: Yeah, I always pictured Metropolis being like the most amazing city that could be envisioned in the '40s and '50s. Personally, I felt that the current incarnation had become a bit too futuristic and almost took interest away from Superman. I don't think Metropolis should have as much personality as say, Gotham city. It should definitely have a unique look and feel, but at the same time be the "everyman" city.

If it's too stylized in any way it looses its ability to make a man who can fly and see through walls special. Who would be interested in a flying man if there are flying cars everywhere...

JL: I see your pointŠso how is it working on Lex Luthor: Man of Steel with Brian? Is it different from your other recent collaboration with him on Batman: Deathblow?

LB: It's a lot different simply because I feel more comfortable working with Brian now, and I also have an editor who's really involved in the process. Will Dennis has added a welcome angle to the way I work.

He's definitely reigning me in a bit and keeping me headed in the right direction. I'm such a fan of the way Brian writes and I think this project really plays to his strengths because it's very character driven and psychological. I love the fact that he's made Lex a really interesting character to me. I started this project liking Superman way more but Lex has really started to become the guy I want to read about.
