San Diego Comic Con

July 25, 2004: San Diego Comic Con Superman News

The "Superman in the DCU" panel at the San Diego Comic Con was moderated by Will Dennis and Eddie Berganza. Panelists were Brian Azzarello, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Greg Rucka, Chuck Austen, Ivan Reis, Marc Campos, and Jeph Loeb.

There wasn't a lot of new information to come out of this panel, but two points of note was the tentative plan for Jeph Loeb to conclude his "Superman/Batman" run with issue #25, and the fact that Greg Rucka has an up-coming storyline where Lois Lane gets shot.

Other "Superman/Batman" news included news of what's next after the Supergirl story wraps up. Loeb is doing a story with artist Carlos Pacheco. "Carlos is a very strange man," Loeb began. "He wants to draw every character in the DCU, so we're going to try to do just that."

After Pacheco Loeb's final arc will be drawn by Ed McGuinness.

While no great surprise (due to advanced solicitations from DC Comics showing the cover in question), Greg Rucka announced, "I'm giving you a big spoiler here. I shoot Lois in an upcoming issue. Nobody in this room believes she's going to die. That's not the story. The story is in what happens to their relationship after that."

It was also noted that Wonder Woman is appearing in a lot of the Superman titles. The two heroes seem to be having more than a few conflicts. "There's an ideological difference between them," said Rucka. "Are we planning on doing something with that? Yes."

Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee have five issues left in their run. Azzarello said, "We're going to see a few more new villains and maybe a few old ones before it's done."

Jim Lee took a moment to address the complaints about the book because of the lack of action so far. "We're about halfway through the run," Lee said. "We really appreciate your support it's a big story and we wanted to establish the characters you've never seen before."

One of the final things addressed in the panel was the timeline in the various Superman books and how things aren't synching up very well. Azzarello said the non-synch was intentional. "Superman in our book is about a year ahead of the other books," Azzarello said. "You'll see the other books gradually catch up and see what led into our story."
