September 20, 2004: Greg Rucka Talks “Adventures of Superman”

Newsarama caught up with writer Greg Rucka to discuss his continuing run on "Adventures of Superman". It's an interesting interview, with many spoilers and revelations that bode well for future issues. Here's a part of that interview...

Q: Superman flies down to a bank and sees two guys, who've just obviously robbed it, running out. What's the right thing for him to say, what's the wrong thing for him to say?

A: He doesn't take the Spider-Man line, "Going somewhere?" Actually, this is actually kind of a bad example, because I'm not sure he has to say anything. If you robbed a bank, and are running out, Superman is going to land in front of you, and give you the look that says, "Your mother raised you better than this." But that look, coming from Superman, doesn't really read, "Your mother raised you better than this," it reads as something pretty damn scary, because you know you committed a crime, and now you're facing the Man of Steel.

The guiding principle for his dialogue for me is honesty. It's not that it's George Washington, "I shall not tell a lie," it's that it's all got to be from the heart. He only plays games when he has to. He's a straightforward man. He's emotionally straightforward, he's intellectually straightforward, which doesn't mean he's simple or dumb by any stretch of the imagination, because he's not. But for him, more often than not, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, which can get him into trouble.

When you talk about vulnerabilities in a character, if a character is perfect, then there's nothing to write about, which is always the bash on Superman - what's there to say in a Superman story, why is he relevant, blah, blah, blah. The fact of the matter is that what he does is that he exposes the flaws in the arguments made by our better angels. You look at how he acts, and his insistence, and consistency in doing the right thing, and you see all the flaws in it - you see how he can be taken advantage of, you can also see the allure of expediency, which is something I've really come to look at pretty sharply.
