Superman/Batman #9

March 7, 2004: Jeph Loeb Talks New Supergirl

The Pulse caught up with Jeph Loeb to ask him about the up-coming six-part Supergirl story line that hits stores starting on March 24. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: With Michael Turner's artistic strengths, it doesn't come as a surprise you're having Wonder Woman also make an appearance in his arc. How do you regard the character of Wonder Woman, what do you view as her greatest strengths?

A: She's the female equivalent of Superman -- and I mean that in every sense of the word. Warrior, leader, an unyielding force of good. What I like about her is that she's not about being "a woman" -- as much as she's about being the best humanity has to offer -- the same way I see Superman not as an alien, but as someone who is here to show us the best we can be. In the story, she'll takes a very strong attitude about what should be done with this mysterious girl and her point of view, while in some ways the most radical, can also be seen as the most practical.

Q: You told Wizard the story "allows us to see these characters who are friends first and allies second." Why do you think the friendship aspect of their relationship is important?

A: It colors the way they respond to any situation. If you're an ally, by its definition you are first looking after your own interests, but willing to cooperate with another person/country to achieve a common goal. Friends, however, have to look within themselves and see how each decision they make will affect each other -- as well the outcome of the alliance.
