Superman: True Brit

July 9, 2004: Kim Howard Johnson Talks “Superman: True Brit”

The Pulse caught up with writer Kim Howard Johnson to discuss, amongst other things, his co-authorship of the up-coming comic book special "Superman: True Brit". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: Who came up with the idea for True Brit?

A: Apparently, John (Cleese) got it on a postcard from a little man in Swindon call Figgis. He got it from a woman called Mildred Spong who lives on the Isle of Man. But she absolutely refuses to say where she got it from.

Q: Are you a comic book fan? If so, which ones are your favorites. If not, what made you want to work on a Superman story?

A: I have been a comics fan for many years, though I now have fewer than 40,000 of them at home...

I came of age in the early-to-mid Silver Age, and so the most formative story for me, like everyone else of that era, was the issue of Jimmy Olsen, in which he changed into the Giant Turtle-Boy. In fact, I think that sort of thinking influenced Superman: True Brit...

    Q: What is True Brit?

A: Superman: True Brit is "The Giant Turtle Boy of Metropolis" for the new millennium; this is the story that will answer questions no one has even thought to ask--and it'll serve 'em right for asking them in the first place.

Q: Will we see a UK version of Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White? What other familiar Superman characters are you using in this tale?

A: It wouldn't be much of a Superman story without his pal and his girlfriend, now, would it? Of course we'll have to have--oh, wait, I see what you mean... Get rid of Lois, Jimmy, and Perry, eh? Interesting suggestion! Let me run that past John..
