October 5, 2004: Comics Gaining Educational Reputation

The Journal Gazette/Times-Courier has published an article titled, "Comic books interest reluctant readers at middle school", which looks at one school where comic books and graphic novels are being used as educational tools to help students who are reluctant to read. Here's an excerpt from the article...

A student bold enough to read a comic book in class could once watch with dismay as the teacher scolded him and confiscated the book.

But comic books, once looked at as fun and folly, are now known as graphic novels, and have earned respect from educators as a viable reading and learning tool for students.

"Graphic novels, once known as comic books, now have more of a story with them," said Anieta Trame, Mattoon Middle School media coordinator. "They include lots of beautiful artwork and have renowned illustrators. There is currently a big push for graphic novels because it is a way to entice the reluctant reader."

Sarah Knobloch's eighth-grade language arts classes are using large encyclopedias specifically written and illustrated about the creation and the history of familiar superheroes including The Hulk, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Superman and Batman. The students work in groups and have to use other sources in research including library materials and the Internet as part of the project.
