Superman/Batman

May 18, 2004: Dexter Vines Talks About Inking “Superman/Batman”

The Pulse caught up with inker Dexter Vines to discuss his many projects, including his work on "Superman/Batman". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: How did you become a part of the Superman/Batman team?

A: About two years ago at Wizard World Chi town, my old editor bud Eddie Berganza pulled me to the side and asked if I would be interested in working on a new book with Batman and Superman that he and Ed McGuinness where getting ready to produce. Now a few years earlier I had been given an opportunity to ink Superman over Ed but I had just started inking on Wolverine over Leinil Yu, so I turned it down. It was a difficult decision to make because I really wanted to work with Ed. This time when the offer came, I had just started inking Weapon X over Georges Jeanty, so the timing again was screwed. As Eddie watched me ponder, he told me to think about it for a few weeks and give him a call. After all of my friends in and out of the business said "Take the job fool!" I called up Eddie and said yes. At the time I was also working on the 128 page Batman: Tenses with Cully Hamner, so I was really wondering if I was going to have time to do it.

Q: Are you a longtime comics reader? How do you think this series compares to some of the past Superman/Batman team-ups?

A: I started reading comics my sophomore year in high school, so it's been a while. In that time, I haven't read a whole lot of Sups/Bats team-up's. The only one I recall is an old Action Comics Annual with John Byrne writing and art by my all-time favorite Art Adams.
