January 10, 2004: Jim Lee Interviews Brian Azzarello

Jim Lee has conducted his own interview over at the Newsarama website, this time interviewing fellow "Superman" collaborator Brian Azzarello. Here is part of the interview...

JL: In five words or less, how will your take on Superman be different from previous?

BA: Um... Jim Lee's drawing it.

JL: Hahah - alright, that works. You said you would never do superheroes again after Batman and Superman. Are you hedging your bets or saying you don't want to repeat yourself?

BA: Neither. Look, there are a lot of creators in this business that have a real affection for superheroes-- but I'm not one of them-- so I think it's best if I leave the superheroes to those creators and concentrate on what floats my boat. I'll be a lot more satisfied with myself at the end of the day if I spend my time writing about people struggling to save themselves rather than save the world. Superheroes will do just fine without me mucking up their happy endings.

JL: Do you feel more or less pressure working on iconic characters like Superman and Batman? Do you feel it is an impossible task to please the mainstream and what I consider to be your more hardcore followers?

BA: I don't feel any pressure at all-- and the only reader I have to please is my editor, 'cause he signs the vouchers. As for working on the icons, no pressure there, either. Writing Batman and Superman wasn't my idea - I didn't propose it, I was asked to do it. If the status quo was something they were looking to maintain they would have asked someone else. As for my hardcore readers, they'll let me know if I let them down. I don't think I have yet.
