November 9, 2004: Previous Graphic Designer Talks about “Superman Lives”
In 1997 Bradford Richardson was the lead graphic designer on "Superman Lives" (which was the title of the new Superman movie) back in the day when Tim Burton was signed on to direct the script written by Kevin Smith. That whole project fell through, but Bradford recently told Superman-V.com all about his time working on that film. Here's an excerpt from the interview...
- Q:What were you assigned to design?
A: Initially, 3 versions of the Superman logo and the Lexcorp logo. Tim [Burton] and Rick [Heinrichs, Production Designer] were being pressured by Producers to completely redesign the Superman logo to make it look like the successful, new Batman logo. I pointed out that the original Superman logo was not only one of the greatest logos of all time but that, as a brand, it had world-wide recognition. So, I created the definitive version of the original Superman logo. It was agreed that this 'original' version would be used for Tim's film.
But, for the climactic fight sequence I needed to create a fierce 'battle logo' for Superman which could be pulled apart and utilized as knife weapons. Prior to this series of scenes Superman is killed by the villain then brought back to life within the fortress of solitude so that he can face the villain with renewed strength.
Tim wanted Superman to be reborn into a suit of armor. I suggested a tendonous looking exoskeleton. The amazingly talented illustrator, Jacques Rey worked up a drawing, it looked great and emphasized the metallic battle logo.
This battle logo is one of many logos I created as the lead graphic designer for Tim Burton's Superman Lives. My primary concern for this project was to protect the integrity of the original Superman logo by creating a Master version. My master logo is currently being used in all Superman related projects.
