August 18, 2004: No Super Deal for ESC

The Hollywood Reporter has published an article confirming that ESC Entertainment will not be involved in the making of the up-coming Superman movie leading to cut-backs and a reduction in staff levels. Here's the report...

ESC Entertainment, the visual effects facility behind Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Matrix Reloaded," "The Matrix Revolutions" and the recent "Catwoman," is going on hiatus and reducing its staff to a skeletal level.

ESC president Thomas Davila notified employees of the pending layoffs in a company e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

In the e-mail, Davila attributed the downsizing to the company's failure to win the visual effects work on the upcoming Superman film, which Bryan Singer has just come on board to direct.

"I am sorry to have to inform you that ESC has been advised it will not be awarded work on the Superman project," Davila wrote. "Obviously, this is very disappointing as Superman would have meant a substantial amount of work that would have kept ESC busy into 2006."

According to sources, Warners has selected Mark Stetson to serve as the visual effects supervisor on Superman. He recently oversaw the VFX on Columbia Pictures' "Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle" at Sony Pictures Imageworks.
