December 18, 2003: “Smallville” Explosion Startles Langley Locals

The Langley Advance has published a report on a Special FX stunt on the set of "Smallville" which caused quite a commotion in the town on Langley in British Columbia. Here's an excerpt from the article...

On Dec. 12, around 11 p.m., the Smallville crew blew up a house for a scene in the series, and the resulting explosion was a little more than anyone had bargained for.

The earth-shaking blast and accompanying vibrations were felt throughout Langley Township and City, and even on the other side of the Fraser River in Maple Ridge.

"We had lots of 911 calls coming in," said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cst. Christine Dinham-Jones. "The phones went crazy. The switchboard was very busy with people calling in to find out what it was."

According to Township Assistant Fire Chief Len Foss, police and fire crews knew about the shoot and were on standby for the explosion.

Permission to blow up the home had been obtained from Langley Township.

Provincial standards for setting off explosives were adhered to, and residents in the immediate area of the shoot were warned about the upcoming blast.

But the boom was bigger than expected.

"We were well aware of it, but it was not supposed to be that big," said Foss.
