Darkseid

June 30, 2003: Bruce Timm Talks Darkseid

Toon Zone caught up with Bruce Timm to ask him who his favorite Superman villain is... Here's an excerpt from the interview...

It is as the Man of Steel's most dangerous and implacable foe that Darkseid reveals himself most completely. "He's very much like the classic James Bond villains," Timm observes. "As Kingsley Amis pointed out, the best Bond villains - Goldfinger, Dr. No, Blofeld - are all evil authority figures, or 'dark father' figures, with Bond playing the role of disrespectful, willfully disobedient schoolboy. It's implicit in 'Apokolips - Now!' in the 'Lucifer tempting Jesus' scene on the cliff; and it's explicit in 'Legacy' with Darkseid's 'adoption' of Superman. The climax of 'Legacy' especially resonates with that father/son dynamic: 'You've been a bad boy. Now take your punishment.'"

The irony, of course, is that Superman is actually the good guy - almost too much so, in the eyes of some comic book readers. But Timm thinks this is the secret of the character. "People who want him to be more of a bad-ass are missing the point," he argues. "He was raised in the heartland of America by two wonderful, loving parents who instilled in him a powerful sense of 'right and wrong.' So for all that everyone complains about Superman's 'boy scout' qualities, that's exactly what he is. He's not just super-strong, super-fast, etc. He's super-good, too. He's the ultimate man."
