December 30, 2003: Welling on the Future of “Smallville”
Zap2It.com spoke with Tom Welling about his new film "Cheaper By The Dozen" and asked him about his work on "Smallville" as Clark Kent. Here's an excerpt from the article...
- WHILE being typecast is a fear for any actor, Welling doesn't feel that there is very much he can do about it.
"When you play a superhero, I think because of the wardrobe more than anything else, you run a higher risk of being typecast. But I'm hoping that Clark, playing the high school kid who has these abilities and is trying to fit in, I don't think it's so on-the-nose that it's going to happen," he says. "Only the people who watch the shows and the people who watch the movies and the people who cast the movies and television shows will make that decision -- I don't have that ability. All I can do as an actor is try to do things that challenge me and usually that means doing things that are different."
Typecasting or not, "Smallville" isn't going away anytime soon. The series is the network's No. 2 show and is sure to get picked up next year -- and probably the next couple years following. But Welling says he isn't interested in playing the role forever.
"Well, I don't think 10 years from now," he says on how long he wants to be playing Kent. "I think we'll go at least a five-year period, but I don't have any interest to play Clark Kent in college, Clark Kent at his first job, Clark Kent becoming Superman, Clark Kent dying... ."
Rumors have circulated around the internet (started by a report at Dark Horizons) that Tom Welling spoke with radio shock-jock Howard Stern regarding the possibility of him starring in the new Superman movie and the end of "Smallville". Readers should note that this "interview" has not been confirmed, and that information from "Smallville" Executive-Producer Al Gough has come to hand to indicate that "Smallville" could well run another 4 seasons.
