July 8, 2003: “Twilight” Signals Second Dawn for “Justice League”

Toon Zone have published a review of the first 2-part episode for the second season of "Justice League" which aired this past Saturday on Cartoon Network. Here's an excerpt from the review...

Cartoon Network on Saturday gave Justice League fans an advance look at the series' second season with a "Justice for All" special event that paired two classic Superman episodes with "Twilight," a brand new Justice League story featuring the return of über-villain Darkseid. The ruler of Apokalips wasn't the only the only thing that showed up, however. The new episode also saw the return of the Superman that fans have been clamoring for, and it also signaled that the series, which suffered a sometimes shaky first season, seems to have found its bearings.

Producer Bruce Timm has said that he and the show's creative staff have worked to correct and improve upon previous weaknesses. Of course, promises made are not promises kept, but "Twilight" amply suggests that they are well on their way to delivering. Fans have foremost complained that Justice League's Superman is not the Man of Steel that they remember from his previous incarnation, calling him timid, anxious and underpowered. That was not the Superman that showed up on Saturday night, however: In this story he came out swinging, decking arch-nemesis Darkseid as soon as he appeared in the Watchtower and callously rejecting the dark god's appeals for aid against renegade Kryptonian menace Brainiac. Much of Superman's hostility, of course, can be ascribed to his wretched past encounters with Darkseid, and were that the only sign of a new attitude cynical viewers might hold out scant hope for sustained improvement. But Superman was also given an exit line - "You're not always right, Bruce" - that he delivers to a Batman who means to be comforting but who comes off as smug. It's a chilling line that seems to augur a character who will be less keen to maintain a pleasant, diplomatic tone with his teammates than was his earlier wont.
