Smallville Comic

February 13, 2003: An Interview with Smallville's Mark Verheiden

The Pulse website caught up with Mark Verheiden, a writer and supervising producer on the WB's hit TV show "Smallville", who is also working on the up-coming bimonthly Smallville comic. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: What's coming up in the Smallville TV series this year?

VERHEIDEN: Obviously, we're all excited that Christopher Reeve has agreed to appear on an episode of the show. In terms of the rest of the season, there are some very dramatic moments ahead for Martha and Jonathan, and Lex is going to go through some major changes, but the focus remains on the relationships between our principles -- Clark and Lana, Clark and Lex, Lex and Lionel. That's the heart and soul of SMALLVILLE...

Q: What made you want to be involved with the Smallville comic? What do you think this comic will add to the show? How will the two compliment each other?

VERHEIDEN: Well, I love comics, and DC's always been great, so it seemed like it would be fun. But on another level, the SMALLVILLE comics give us a chance to tell stories without any budget concerns, and to fill in/expand on the TV episodes. For instance, an upcoming issue of the comic explores what happened just after the events of "Duplicity," where Pete Ross learned Clark's secret. Another story reflects on the changes that have come on in Lana's life, from quitting cheerleading to losing her boyfriend Whitney. I'd love to do more "what happened between this and this" type stories... for instance, the bad cop in "Rogue" drove Clark hundreds of miles to Metropolis. What exactly did they talk about on that trip, and what else could have happened during the journey?
