November 6, 2014: Jerry Siegel's Typewriter Purchased by Collector

Jerry Siegel The Royal Portable Quiet Deluxe typewriter used by Jerry Siegel to write many of his Superman stories has been purchased by Los Angeles police commission president Steve Soboroff this week, adding to his already impressive collection of typewriters.

Siegel said in 1995 that "one of the little known stories of Superman is that he owes a lot of his existence to this typewriter... it was the only portable I ever had or used." Siegel, who died in 1996, would have been 100 years in old in October.

Soboroff purchased the typewriter from Siegel's daughter, Laura Siegel Larson. "The reason I finally decided to part with the typewriter was to allow the public to begin enjoying it during his 100th birthday year," Larson told Soboroff. "It is my way of sharing something very personal that belonged to him with people who love and respect him, his work, and his legacy." The 27 machines in Soboroff's collection will be displayed in a Los Angeles museum exhibition to be announced soon.
