June 23, 2014: Smallville ComicCon Exceeds Expectations

Smallville ComicCon For the second year running, the town of Hutchinson, Kansas officially renamed itself "Smallville" for a couple of days, to celebrate Superman's connection with the state, with the small town closely resembling what many would imagine Clark Kent's home town to look like. This year the turn out to the Smallville ComicCon exceeded expectations, with local bank ATMs running out of money!

"It has been a huge success," Troy Robinson said. "As far as it goes for the vendors, artists and writers, they all came with a specific goal in sales to make it a success for them, and all the vendors had made their goal by noon (Saturday)."

About 60 exhibitors came to the Smallville ComicCon. About 1,200 to 1,500 people paid admission to get in on Saturday, followed by at least 1,000 more on Sunday.

They posed for pictures with assorted superheroes and sci-fi characters, listened to speakers and bought comic books, costumes, action figures, games, jewelry. DVDs and autographed art work. A steady stream of people made free-will charity donations for the opportunity to step inside the ropes and get up close to replicas of the DeLorean car that was transformed into a time machine in the movie "Back to the Future," the General Lee from "The Dukes of Hazzard" or the black TransAm from "Smokey and the Bandit." Those donations were split between Reno County Red Cross and the Wounded Warrior Project.

They spent so freely that by 2 p.m. Sunday, both ATMs inside the Meadowlark Building on the State Fair Grounds were out of cash.

"And we were told that couldn't happen," Troy Robinson said.
