March 26, 2014: Ideas for Throwing a Superman-Themed Party

Kryptonite Punch By Adam Riemer

Superman parties aren't just for kids. With geek culture growing and a love of comics and heroes increasing, Superman parties for adults are becoming more and more popular. Below are some fun recipes and unique twists on party games to throw a "super" party.

Superman themed foods and presentations:

A Superman party can be taken "higher than the tallest building" when people come in and find an awesome spread of food presented in a cool way. Here are a few food ideas and presentations that are easy to do, look amazing and get your party off to the right start. Eat your heart out Lex because this spread is not for you!

Kryptonite Punch

You Need:

  • 1 punch bowl
  • 1 large pot
  • 1 large box to hold the pot
  • Ingredients for your favorite champagne punch
  • Green food coloring
  • A bundt cake pan
  • One cookie cooling rack
  • Dry ice

Instructions: Add green food coloring to water in the bundt cake pan and place in your freezer to get a kryptonite green ice ring. Now take the large box and place it on the center of the table or to the side guests will be entering from. Place the pot with hot water inside the box but don't fill it all the way since you'll be adding hot water again later.

Place the drying rack over the top of the box leaving space so you can drop dry ice and pour hot water into the pot below. Place the punch bowl on top of the drying rack and make your favorite champagne punch. Once guests arrive, drop in the green ice ring and then carefully and with dry ice safe gloves drop dry ice into the pot of hot water below. (Make sure not to get any in your champagne punch).

Now the fog will get trapped in the box and start rising over the sides through the holes in the drying rack giving you an amazing effect that spills out from under the punch and the fog carries along the table and down to the floor giving your room a super lair look.

Fortress of Solitude Cake

You Need:

  • One cake mix
  • Vanilla frosting
  • One bag of long white rock candy sticks
  • Blue food coloring
  • Action figures
  • 1 piece of foam board

Instructions: Prepare your favorite cake from a mix, placing the batter in two round pans. Now take the vanilla icing and add blue food coloring to it until you get either an icy blue or Superman blue. Once fully baked, stack the cakes and spread with vanilla frosting. (You can cut the cakes into a diamond shape or leave it circle).

Now take this and place it on a piece of foam board that has about an inch around the edges of the cake. Take your rock candy sticks and punch the stick through the foam board and line it around the cake to look like the ice walls. Next add in the action figures for the cake and candles.

Open-Faced Super Burgers

You Need:

  • Ingredients for hamburgers and cheeseburgers
  • 1 diamond shaped cookie cutter
  • Ketchup and mustard
  • Toothpicks
  • Tape
  • A printer
  • Scissors

Instructions: Find cape shaped mini print outs or printables online and add on the Superman logo to the cape (or use this one here). Now print them out and cut them out of the paper. Take a piece of tape and tape them onto the toothpicks.

Take the cookie cutter and stuff the burger meat into it to make emblem shaped burger patties. Prepare hamburgers and cheeseburgers to your liking. Place the burgers on half a hamburger bun so the top part is opened and draw the Superman logo on the burger with ketchup or mustard. Now place the toothpicks with the capes in each burger to give Lex his ultimate revenge.

Using these three food ideas for a Superman themed party food spread is the ultimate way to display your spread. The fog rolling across the table from the kryptonite punch floating over and around the cake and burgers will look amazing and get everyone ready to party when they enter the room.

Two fun Superman themed games and prize options.

Superman Headbands

You need:

  • Masking tape or sports headbands
  • A permanent marker
  • Notecards

Instructions: Before guests arrive, prepare either pieces of masking tape or sports headbands by writing the name of various Superman characters on each piece of tape/headband. Prepare notecards with each character's attributes, weakness and/or related items and place them around the room for guests to find. As guests arrive, place the tape/headband on each one's forehead, they then have to figure out which character they are, and may only be spoken to as that person without other people using their name. Once each guest has figured out who they are, they set out to find the correlating items on the cards hidden around the room. This game makes for great icebreakers for people to meet and usually ends up with lots of laughs.

Superman Pictionary

You need:

  • A white board or chalk board and dry-erase markers or chalk
  • Notecards
  • A permanent marker
  • A timer

Instructions: Before guests arrive, prepare notecards with trivia questions about Superman movies, episodes or actors and place them in a bowl or a hat.

Divide guests into two teams. One member of each team draws a card, and then has one minute to figure out the answer and try to draw it on the white board and have their team correctly guess the scene. If the person doesn't get the trivia question and the team doesn't guess it, the trivia question is then given to the opposing team. If they answer the trivia question right, they win the point.

Now that everyone has eaten some "super" food and played some fun games, it's time for favors and prizes. A few that are affordable and fun include Superman boxers or Superman pajamas, a box set of classic movies or even buying everyone a Superman DVD or Bu-ray, comic book or novel, which you can find for a reasonable price on Amazon or eBay.
