October 18, 2014: Superman Costume Statue of Murdered Boy Unveiled

Baldwin Statue You'll recall that back in July DC Entertainment reversed their initial decision to allow a Toronto family to use the Superman "S" shield on a statue dedicated to the memory of five-year-old Jeffrey Baldwin who died in 2002. Today the official unveiling took place in Toronto's Greenwood Park.

The life-sized bronze statue sees Baldwin dressed up as Superman, an image familiar to anyone who followed the inquest into the boy's death.

The five-year-old boy died in 2002 after suffering horrific abuse at the hands of his maternal grandparents, but the life-size statue in the park at Greenwood Ave. and Dundas St. E. depicts the little boy as seen in one of the few happy moments in his short life - wearing a Superman costume.

"Hopefully the statue will be a reminder to people of the need to report (suspected abuse) and possibly save a child's life," said Todd Boyce, who led the charge to have the bronze statue made, at the unveiling.

"There's so much support and compassion for Jeffrey," said an emotional Todd Boyce, the Ottawa father who spearheaded online fundraising efforts that raised more than $36,000 for the memorial. "So much that he didn't have in his life, but he has it now."

Superman Homepage reporter Patrick Asselin was in attendance at the unveiling, and took the photo (shown right) of the statue.
