April 1, 2014: Metropolis, Illinois Superman Statue Being Replaced

Statue Being Removed DC Entertainment have forced the Chamber of Commerce in Metropolis, Illinois to replace the Superman Statue in the town square with one reflecting the character's current costume as seen in the New 52 comic books.

The 15 foot bronze statue, erected in 1993, was removed via a heavy-duty crane last night in preparation for its replacement, which is expected to be in place ahead of this year's Superman Celebration in June.

The new statue, which will be five feet shorter, is expected to cost $250,000 and will be funded by supporters purchasing virtual parts of the statue's body via a website to be set up at OwnASupermanBodyPart.com.

The current brick foundation (in the shape of the Superman logo) will remain in place. Etched into the concrete block he stands upon is the motto, "Truth - Justice - The American Way".

Here's an artist's impression of what the new statue will look like.
