January 22, 2014: Siegel and Shuster Society Opt for Name Change

Ohio License Plate In light of the recent success gained from the sale of Superman license plates in Ohio, with funds raised directed to help those in need within the Cleveland area, the Siegel and Shuster Society has unanimously voted to rename itself the Siegel and Shuster Foundation.

The group, formed to honor Superman and his creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, was told it earned $20,000 between Oct. 7 and Dec. 31 from the sale of Ohio license plates bearing the famous Superman insignia and the legend, "Truth, Justice and the American Way."

Suddenly, the non-profit charitable organization was faced with the pleasant task of figuring out what to do with the extra money. The solution was clear: What would Superman do? Or, more accurately, what would Siegel and Shuster do?

"It's our intention to put the money where it's needed in Northeast Ohio," said founding society member Irving Fine, who is Jerry Siegel's cousin. "We're figuring out how to do that. We also talked about granting scholarships to kids with talent in creative writing, art and journalism in the names of Jerry and Joe."
