August 5, 2014: Real-Life Superman Arrives in Time at Crash Scene

Hutchinson Crash Site A real-life Superman was the first to arrive on the scene of a car crash in Hutchinson, Kansas on Friday, when Dalton Rodriguez, wearing a "Man of Steel" costume, was the first responder to the accident.

"I didn't even remember I was wearing it," Rodriguez said regarding his attire when he responded to the accident. "I heard the crash and it didn't even register."

The event was a back-to-school celebration happening between 11th and 14th avenues on Main Street. The accident occurred on Friday.

Rodriguez said it was his stepmom's idea when she was helping with the back-to-school event. She said there would be children present who would like to get their picture taken with Superman, but it's not every day someone gets saved by a superhero.

At the recent Smallville Festival, Mike Wietrick [the owner of the store where the accident happened, who is also one of the original supporters for the renaming of Hutchinson as Smallville] gave away four 2014 Smallville Hero medals to different organizations: EMS, fire, police and military. A representative of each group was present to accept the medals at the festival. Wietrick kept a fifth medal to give to someone who showed extra enthusiasm.

"That's what Superman is all about," Wietrick said. "Not many people react that way when something like that happens. It's what Smallville stands for."

For his heroic actions, Rodriguez was awarded by Wietrick the final 2014 Smallville Hero of the Year medal. Rodriguez said he is honored to receive it but that he was just at the right place at the right time.

“It was just perfect timing,” Rodriguez said.
