February 20, 2014: Joe Shuster's Life Story as a Living Comic Book

The life and career of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster will be explored in the form of a living comic book in The Only Animal's latest play "Nothing But Sky", written and directed by Kendra Fanconi.

Meet Joe, the artist, his best friend, Jerry, the writer, and Joanne, the original model for Lois Lane and the girl they both love. Get on board the skyrocket as their creation goes from slushpile to the most popular Superhero of all times. The play becomes a living comic book, where real and drawn characters merge as we discover that our closest friends are equal parts Villain and Hero. But the real danger comes when DC Comics gets a hold of Superman, and what you created might return to destroy you.

Seamlessly blending live action and 3D video projection, Nothing But Sky is a comic book biopic, where we leap off the cliffs of artistry and love... and hope that we can fly.

"We wanted to tell the story through a living comic book and brought in Calgary-based artist Keith Murray, who we think is amazing, who brought in Paul Dutton to design our Shuster Superman, who is quite different from any of the others out there," Fanconi said.

"There is also a local animation team convened by Keith. The presentation follows the various stages of creating a comic book - pencil drawings, then filling in and erasing, then colouring and so on. We tell the story along a similar arc using video projections to create sets, movement and even costumes."

"Nothing But Sky" will run from February 20 to March 2 at the Faris Family Studio, The Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC. Tickets are on sale now.
