July 26, 2009: More "Smallville" Pre-Panel Photos From SDCC

From inside the "Smallville" panel room, here are photos of the cast's name placeholders. I guess Tom Welling was so last minute, there wasn't time to print his out like the others. In just a few minutes, these name placeholders will have people behind them - maybe even people with those names. Stay tuned.

July 26, 2009: BREAKING NEWS! "Smallville" Clark's Super Suit Description From SDCC

Ivan and Luis Jaime just sent the following text from inside the "Smallville" panel at San Diego Comic-Con:

Clark will be wearing a long black coat with a black "S" on the chest. He was interacting with Lois from the future in footage just shown to the audience. It looks like something from out of "The Matrix".

Also, Ivan reports that Tom Welling is now on stage and he is NOT wearing a Superman suit.

More to come!

July 26, 2009: BREAKING NEWS! Description of "Smallville" Clark's Chest Emblem and Other Spoilers

"Smallville" Spoiler Alert - Turn away now if you don't want to know any of the details of season nine coming from inside the SDCC "Smallville" panel.

I asked Luis about the "S" logo Clark is sporting and whether it's a classic Superman symbol. He responded:

No, it's almost an amalgam of the Superman logo in "Superman Returns" and the stylized "S" worn by Kal-L of Earth-2, the Golden Age Superman.

Luis and Ivan Jaime just sent in the following description of the preview clips they were just shown:

Lois went to the future. There's a steamy love scene with Lois and Clark. The whole Justice League was shown in the video. Green Arrow, Aquaman, Impulse, Cyborg, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Watchtower, and ZOD. The video has the tag line "THE WORLD'S GREATEST HERO HAS RISEN", then the "S" symbol is revealed. Then they showed the JLA and peppered in some clips. It also had the tag line "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD" and they showed some Zod footage.

Erica Durance, who plays Lois Lane, will be appearing in 18 episodes during season nine. Tom Welling will be directing two episodes.

It's just been reported from inside the SDCC "Smallville" panel that DC Comics writer Geoff Johns will be writing another episode of "Smallville" for season nine. The first episode he wrote, season eight's "Legion", introduced the 31st Century Legion of Super-Heroes. The new episode introduces the JSA. No details were provided on whether the JSA are heroes of the past on the "Smallville" world or parallel world visitors or something else entirely.

July 26, 2009: "Smallville" Name Change Rumors False And Update on Jimmy Olsen

"Smallville" is staying "Smallville", according to the panelists at the SDCC "Smallville" panel. Rumors of a name change or movie spin-off titled "Metropolis" are just rumors. According to Superman Homepage reporter Luis Jaime, "They said that the show is basically 'Smallville: The Metropolis Years', kinda like 'Saved By the Bell: The College Years'."

Regarding Jimmy Olsen, the writers said that Jimmy is gone and not returning. They want to eventually sync the show with the comics and Jimmy wasn't the right age.

The "Smallville" panel is now over. Ivan and Luis will be filing a full report with photographs over the next few days.

July 26, 2009: "Smallville" Superman Emblem Details Revealed at SDCC

Superman Homepage SDCC reporters Ivan and Luis Jaime have more information about the 'costume' being worn by Tom Welling in season nine of "Smallville". The "S" that Clark wears in season nine, according to Ivan, looks to be "the 'Superman Returns' logo, but bigger and silver/light blue. The rest of the 'costume' looked like the Punisher: all black trench coat, black shirt, and black pants."

Luis describes the suit as follows: "The chest symbol is flat on his chest and is in grey, on some kind of black outfit, most likely just a black shirt and black pants with a long black coat like in "The Matrix". There are no tights or spandex. Now that we have a better look at the "S", it is just like the "Superman Returns" symbol.

While the media was forbidden from taking pictures of the screen while the preview clips were being shown, the Superman Homepage did get a picture of the promotional card that was shown on the screen immediately following the preview. The "S" on Clark's chest is different than what's seen in this picture.

July 26, 2009: SDCC "Smallville" Season 9 Preview Video Details

Superman Homepage SDCC reporters Ivan and Luis Jaime have written up, to the best of their recollection, a detailed summary of the brief video clip that was shown this morning at the SDCC "Smallville" panel. Obviously a description of an official preview of season nine of "Smallville" is potentially spoiler-laden so don't read on if you don't want to be spoiled:

The panel started with a WB TV executive standing at the podium and saying that they have big news. "Smallville" will be moving to Friday at 8 PM. She then said that they are now going to show a Comic Con exclusive trailer for Season 9.

The room goes dark, and we hear an incredible musical score and the screen reads:

THE WORLD'S GREATEST SUPERHERO HAS RISEN

Then they flashed the "S" shield.

    AND HE IS NOT ALONE

They then showed quick montages for each character composed of short shots with them from the previous seasons. Similar to the opening credits, but shorter and faster. They were each followed by comic book panel images of their counterparts throughout the ages in a "flip-book" style montage.

GREEN ARROW

AQUAMAN

BLACK CANARY

IMPULSE

CYBORG

ZATANNA

MARTIAN MANHUNTER

SUPERGIRL

THE LEGION

Then the screen goes black and we get a glimpse of Chloe saying:

"Watchtower is officially online."

Then we fade to black and we see:

AT THE BRINK OF DESTINY COMES HIS DARKEST HOUR
EVERY HERO MUST PAY FOR THE SINS OF HIS FATHER

Then you see a figure standing over a giant "Z" burned into the ground and you see the words:

    KNEEL BEFORE ZOD

We then see some footage of Callum as Zod. He attacks Tess Mercer. He fights with Clark. The scenes were loaded with action.

We then see Lois pick a name plate off a desk from the Daily Planet. It reads: John Corbin.

We see flashes of Corbin as a regular civilian and then they show him with his shirt off and his kryptonite heart exposed. The kryptonite heart is embedded in his chest similar to Iron Man, but it has either thick wires right below his skin, or his veins were protruding similar to Kenny Braverman -- Conduit -- or Bane.

Then we see Lois dressed in black with black hair as you hear a female voice say Lois was in the future. We see brief glimpses of "future" Lois and the Legion.

Then they show us a scene with Lois passionately embracing someone in bed. The intimate scene is a love scene, and it goes on just long enough for us to see who the mystery paramour is: Clark.

And finally, they show Clark on top of the Daily Planet building wearing all black attire with an "S" on his chest. Instead of a cape, he wears a long coat. He leaps from the roof and swoops down. Then it fades to black.

SMALLVILLE

SEASON 9

Image of the "S" shield.

And it ends.

The crowd went wild. The whole thing was under 5 minutes long, and half of that was just recapping the last season. So everything new we described happened very quickly. We'll have a full report on the rest of the panel soon.

July 26, 2009: SDCC "Smallville" Panel EXCLUSIVE Cast Photographs

Now that SDCC is winding down and I have a second to breathe (nice weekend to take a vacation Steve!), I want to just take a minute to thank brothers Ivan and Luis Jaime who may just be responsible for the best convention coverage the Superman Homepage has ever done. There will be additional reports from Ivan and Luis when they get home from SDCC both on "Smallville" and other Superman matters -- including the details of a media sit-down with Bruce Timm, Clancy Brown, and Kevin Conroy. Stay with the Superman Homepage this week for this and more convention follow-up.

Ivan and Luis tell me they took "about 100 pictures" in the "Smallville" panel and we'll be running them this week. In the meantime, Ivan and Luis sent in six high-resolution photographs from the "Smallville" panel. Enjoy.
