Poll Position

April 9, 2009: Poll Position - No Flights/No Tights

By G.V. Golwitzer (GeorgeHouseofEl)

It's Tuesday, October 16th, 2001. In Midwestern Kansas there's a slight breeze in the air as Autumn seems to be firmly settling in. The endless corn fields are in their final stages before the farmers move on harvest time, a young man named Clark Kent is getting ready for school and the up-coming homecoming festivities, and two producers named Gough and Miller are assuring that young man that, despite the fact that your character should say differently, there will be no flights and no tights.

No Flights.

Eh, wrong. I need only to bring up the handy Superman Homepage KO Count to see that at least nineteen occurrences of flights has happened in these last eight years. Clark floating above his bed, Clark bugging out as Kal, Clark riding in a helicopter (I've been assured by said KO Count that this is indeed an instance of flying). So the rule of "No Flights", should it be abandoned for Season 9 of Smallville? According to Superman mythos, all of Superman's powers manifested themselves in Clark's teenage years including, but not limited to, FLYING. Clark Kent on Smallville is well beyond his teenage years, ergo Clark Kent on Smallville should be flying.

No Tights.

To understand the second half of the No Flights/No Tights rule you need to first understand what constitutes tights. At first glance most would assume that this rule bans all forms of the traditional Superman costume. No red and blue tights with the familiar 'S' logo complete with red boots, underwear, and cape. But, taken to its core, this rule says NO TIGHTS. Which mean's Clark should not be seen in any form of a costume, his or any costume (including the Green Arrow's Green Spandex/Leather Combo). Smallville has broken this half of the rule at least THREE times. (Just check the KO Count).

Should Smallville abandon its No Flights/No Tights rule in its 9th season? How can a show abandon a rule it's never followed? The answer is... Yes, Smallville creators, writers, and actors alike should put their egos aside and abandon its long ignored rule of No Tights/No Flights in the 9th season, heck, it's this writer's opinion that the rule should have been abandoned long ago.

What say you?
