Poll Position

November 25, 2009: Poll Position - Kryptonite on Krypton?

Last week's Member's Poll asked the question "In your opinion, did Kryptonite exist before Krypton exploded?" and our November 22nd Poll Position column received some interesting and diverse responses. So I thought I'd ask the same question to Superman writers, actors and other celebrities to get their thoughts on the matter.

Kurt Busiek: "As I understand it, Kryptonite was created during the explosion of Krypton, but if some writer has said (or says in the future) that it was artificially - or naturally-created before that as well, I can't think of any reason it'd be impossible."

Elliot S! Maggin: "I think there was no kryptonite on Krypton, but there may well have been a good deal of it in Krypton before its demise. Probably it was an element of the internal reaction at the core of the planet that Jor-El detected and that, with the final explosion, transformed most if not all of the matter within a certain distance of the core into some form of kryptonite itself."

Jack O'Halloran: "No, it did not exist on Krypton."

Jeph Loeb: "Only after. Shattered pieces of Krypton became erradiated, fell to Earth and became... kryptonite!"

Joe Kelly: "I'm not aware of the current continuity - but for my money, there was no Kryptonite until Krypton exploded."

Eddie Berganza: "I will say 'some'."

Matt Idelson: "My answer would be 'no'. Kryptonite, at least the forms of it which are harmful to Kryptonians, came about as a result of Krypton's explosion. The surviving chunks of the planet were irradiated."

Jon Bogdanove: "I've always accepted it as canon that kryptonite was created in the explosion that destroyed Krypton - hence the name. Kryptonite is the sundered remains of the planet's substance, made uniquely radioactive by the explosion, and scattered throughout the universe. A substantial amount was dragged to Earth in the wake of Kal-El's space craft."

As far as the Member's Poll was concerned, 36% of you said "Yes", but 58% said "No", while 7% had no idea.

So, according to the majority of Superman fans (backed up by the majority of responses we got from the comic book writers, editors, actors, etc...), Kryptonite did not exist before Krypton exploded.

We'll send Neal Bailey over to the offices of the "Smallville" writing team to let them know the results. ;)
