February 24, 2009: The CW Officially Announces "Smallville" Season 9

The CW has officially announced that "Smallville" will be continuing on for a 9th season.

The network also handed out early pickups to five other series - "Gossip Girl," "One Tree Hill, "90210," "Supernatural," and "America's Next Top Model".

"As we continue to build The CW Network as a destination for young women, these six shows have clearly contributed to strengthening our schedule and our brand identity," said Dawn Ostroff, entertainment president of The CW. "By securing these signature hits for next season, we're furthering our commitment to deliver high-quality, original programming to our viewers, advertisers and affiliates."

While producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin will be creating the pilot for "Melrose Place", they could return to "Smallville" if the pilot isn't picked up to series. If "Melrose Place" is picked up then "Smallville" will be steered by the two remaining showrunners, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson.
