Smallville Season 8 Poster

March 26, 2009: Poll Position - Who Will Die on "Smallville"?

By G.V. Golwitzer (GeorgeHouseofEl)

On March 6th Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello broke news that would shake the foundations on Smallville. "Multiple Sources confirm to me exclusively that two pivotal characters will bite the dust in this May's season finale." Ausiello's report left us with very little information other than two cryptic clues; "Both deaths will stick" and "One character qualifies as a Smallville veteran... the other one not so much." Fan's erupted with speculation almost immeadietly.

The breakdown, starting with the veteran character's of Smallville.

Chloe Sullivan:
For: She's been a series regular since day one, easily qualifying her as a "Smallville Veteran". The character of Chloe has never been used in any Superman mythology (the comic books, movies, or any other TV show). The love triangle Smallville has created between her, Jimmy Olson, and Davis Bloome puts her clearly in the path of the monster Doomsday. Plus, Jimmy Olson has never had a wife.
Against: Allison Mack is contracted through Season 9 (But, John Glover was contracted for more episodes when they killed Lionel) and Chloe is a fan favorite. And face the facts, how many times has it been rumoured that Chloe was going to die?

Clark Kent:
For: In the comic books Superman is killed by Doomsday in a final, climatic battle, which seems to be the way the season is headed.
Against: Smallville is about Clark Kent before he becomes Superman, you can't have a show about Clark Kent and not have Clark Kent. Plus, Ausiello's report was clear that "Both deaths will stick" unless Stride Gum is involved and this is all some bad pun, then Clark won't die because if he does, his death wouldn't stick.

Martha Kent:
For: She's been absent from the show for long enough and her death could be a catalyst for Clark to start becoming Superman.
Against: Annette O'Toole isn't contracted or obligated in any way to come back for any more episodes, if it is her death it would likely be off-screen.

Lana Lang:
For: She's no longer contracted to be on Smallville. This Lana Lang does not resemble the Lana Lang from comic books in any way, and on top of that, there is a large group of fans that have been clamoring for her death for some time. Lana's death could also be a catalyst for Clark to start becoming Superman.
Against: She is no longer contracted or obligated to be on the show, and in Smallville continuity she is invulnerable.

Oliver Queen:
For: Oliver, although a good guy, has been on a downward slope this season being impulsive and reckless, throw a bit of alcoholism in there and you get a dangerous combination. It's not that far out there to think that he could try to aid Clark in his fight against Doomsday only to find himself on the casualty list.
Against: The Green Arrow is supposed to die on an exploding airplane, sacrificing his life so others can live. (Well, at least that's how he died the first time...)

Lois Lane:
For: One of the suggestions that a few fans have brought forth is that Chloe could go back to using "Lois Lane" as a pen name making her the Lois Lane we know from the comic books, the one that would go on to marry Clark, leaving the window open for Lois to be one of the two to bite the dust.
Against: It's Lois Lane, the future wife of Clark Kent! And Lois is no blonde.

Jimmy Olsen:
For: He's been on his deathbed once this season, the Davis/Chloe/Jimmy love triangle could put him in harm's way once again, and Jimmy's recent downward spiral with an out of character drug addiction could be paving the way to his death.
Against: He hasn't yet become "Turtle Boy" making it hard to believe he'd be the one to die.

Shelby: (Clark's dog for those of you playing at home)
For: This spoiler could all be a misleading joke and Shelby is the one to go.
Against: What kind of sick mind would decide that killing the dog would be a good idea for ratings? They would probably lose the key demographic with a decision like that.

So which veteran character will it be? There are arugments both ways for all the characters that could be considered Veterans of Smallville. Could the leaked news be old and talking about Lex dying? Or is Lex really dead? He could re-die in the season finale. We've covered all the veteran characters, now on to the "...not so much" category.

Davis Bloom:
For: Doomsday is supposed to die in the fight with Superman. Some speculation has said that Doomsday may be back but Davis won't, meaning that the character of Davis Bloom could "bite the dust"
Against: There has been speculation that Doomsday is in next season which is good cause to think that Davis would be back.

Tess Mercer:
For: She has been trying to figure out Clark's secret by purposely putting herself in harms way, having just betrayed the "supposedly" dead Lex Luthor doesn't bode well for her well-being. On top of everything Tess Mercer is not in any other Superman medium.
Against: Tess definitely has the potential to be a formidable foe for Clark next season, especially since Lex is dead. Tess may not be in any other Superman medium but she is based on two characters that are, Mercy from Superman: The Animated Series and Miss Tessmacher from Superman: The Movie, neither of who die in their respective continuity.

J'onn J'onzz:
For: Everyone's favorite Martian has been without powers for the better part of this season and he has been established as a person who would gladly give his life for Clark. With Clark's battle with Doomsday lurking around the corner is it that hard to believe that J'onn could sacrifice himself to keep Clark alive? Although a character from the comic books his character has been killed before.
Against: The Martian Manhunter is one of the focal players in the future Justice League, it would be hard to imagine a full-fledged JL without J'onn to guide and organize them.

Who will it be? Who will meet their maker in the Smallville Season 8 finale? Will it be Chloe, Lois, Clark, Jimmy, Martha, Oliver, Lana, Shelby, Davis, Tess, or J'onn? Only time, and the May 14th season finale will tell.
