October 5, 2008: Superman/Batman Painting Sells For Record Price

Bloomberg reports that Indonesian I Nyoman Masriadi's painting of Superman and Batman fetched a record HK$4.8 million (US$618,000) in Hong Kong at Asia's first major art auction since the U.S. credit crisis began, the surprise star of a sale marked by caution.

Masriadi's 2 meter-by-3 meter acrylic-on-canvas "Sorry Hero, Saya Lupa," which features the morose-looking comic-book heroes sitting on adjacent toilets fetched eight times its presale top estimate in Sotheby's first evening sale of Asian art. The price is a record for Southeast Asian art.

According to the release text, "Capturing the futility of technology in the face of superheroics, Superman doesn't have time to waste while Lois messes around with the microwave".
