Superman #17

December 4, 2008: Superman During World War II Lecture

The College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois is offering a lecture on the role of Superman during World War II for seniors through their Discovery! Program.

2009 is the 71st Anniversary of the very first comic book superhero, Superman. Created during the Great Depression by two Ohio teenagers, the character would quickly become a worldwide phenomena. So popular was the character that Superman was utilized during the World War II era to help the morale of U.S. troops and promote the war effort. So successful was Superman that the SS newspaper Das Schwarze Korps (April 1940) denounced the creators of Superman and Superman himself.

This class will discuss the various ways that Superman was utilized to help the war effort, including a look at classic comic book covers of the 1930s and 1940s, a history of the character, and a discussion of the Academy Award winning 1940s Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons.

The class will be held on April 7, 2009 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm at the Grayslake, Campus for seniors 50 years of age and older. The lecture is taught by sociology professor John Tenuto whose study of 8,000 Superman, Star Trek and Star Wars fans from 54 nations has been featured on BBC Radio, WGN News, and in the documentary The Force Among Us. Contact Tenuto at jtenuto@clcillinois.edu for more information.

Please read the Discovery! PDF file or visit the College of Lake County website for more details.
