Interview with Kevin Manthei, Composer for Justice League: The New Frontier.Q: Are there any pre-existing themes you worked with on the score?
A: No, the whole concept for the score was really different from other action stories. Just like Darwyn's series is very different because of where it takes place, the late '50's, early '60's. The music needed to follow that format. The music has a late '50's, early '60's kind of sound. There's inspiration taken from Bernard Hermann and his score from The Day the Earth Stood Still. For John Jones when he turns into the detective there's film noir influences. There's even some big band influence like Frank Sinatra-type stuff. But in general we wanted to music to feel like it was part of that world and that we were going back in time and maybe hearing a score that would reference that period of time versus just being a modern score. So there are no electronics or synthesizers or drum beats or any of that kind of stuff that's typical in a modern action score. It's all very orchestral, but done kind of the way that composers back then liked to do it.
Q: So there isn't a theme for Superman that sounds like the music is singing the word, "Superman"?
A: No, there's no theme for Superman. I didn't try to do anything that was reminiscent of any Superman related themes. But the reason Superman doesn't have a theme is because he doesn't have a whole lot of screen time. He has one quick action sequence that goes by quick. Then he goes off and has another action sequence and it's really exciting, but it's more about actions than it is about Superman.
