April 4, 2008: Justice League Movie Tax Rebate Woes and Crew Messages

Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance has issued a report that tries to explain the reasons why the "Justice League" movie was refused the larger 40% tax rebate offered as an incentive to local Australian projects.

Why did the Film Finance Corporation (FFC) decide Justice League is not "Australian"? As it is a tax matter, the FFC does not publicly release reasons for its decision. Given these criteria, it is likely the FFC decided Justice League was not an Australian film because:
  • the subject matter of the film is not "Australian"
  • the authors and scriptwriters and the underlying work (DC Comics) are not "Australian"
  • one of the main producers is not Australian

It would appear that, in their view, this was enough for the film not to qualify for the rebate. Alliance lawyers advise that, under the law, the FFC could not make any other decision.

A number of crew members working on the film in Australia, such as concept artists Daniel James Cox and props maker and scenic artist Billy Shannon, have noted, on their personal websites and blogs, their disappointment at no longer being involved with the project. While American-based Fight Coordinator Richard Norton is back in LA awaiting a start date for the movie.

Thanks to Juan Permisse for the lead on the above information.
