February 15, 2008: Dave Bullock on Directing “New Frontier”

Newsarama.com sat down with Dave Bullock to ask him about his role as director of "Justice League: The New Frontier". Here's a part of the interview...

Q: When I heard Kyle MacLachlan was picked for Superman, I wondered what it would have been like if the live action movies had been done when he was younger, too. He's got the jaw and height.

DB: Right. Honestly, I was thrilled with all the voice talent. I felt we came at it with the appropriate point of view. Each one had a certain quality that fit their specific character.

Q: Did you make MacLachlan lower his voice a little bit? It sounds like he's lowered his tones a bit for the role.

DB: A little bit. At the beginning we had the actors do multiple takes of their lines until we figured out which one they used sounded the best. Some actors, like Jeremy Sisto, didn't have to do too much to voice Batman. That was one thing about having Andrea Romano involved. She really encouraged the actors to act. So, in all the cases, the actors came in acting. We made them feel like they were doing more of a live action reading, not something they would put on Saturday morning. Another one who really came through was Miguel Ferrer.

Q: I remember him as far back as the original Superman series where he voiced Weather Wizard in the race against Flash.

DB: Yeah. Then again, he's good at playing characters who are kind of outsiders. He's also one of my favorite actors on film. He's always managed to be real tough as nails, which added a nice touch to J'onn J'onzz.
