February 29, 2008: “New Frontier” Interview with Director Dave Bullock

Interview with David Bullock, Director of Justice League: The New Frontier.

By Jeffrey Taylor

Q: How much Freedom did you have in directing this? Obviously portions were already storyboarded and Darwyn Cooke took care of a lot of the design.

A: When I got involved with the project, the producer, Mike Gogan, had his hands full with The Batman and they had just put in two weeks with a couple of guys from the studio to see what they could come up with. And when I went down to pitch in on the project, I just didn't feel it reflected the look of Darwyn [Cooke]'s work. Being a fan of the book myself, I felt a little disappointed in what I was seeing. So we held a sort of emergency meeting and just sort of coerced Darwyn to do a little bit of the designing, and of course he was already working on The Spirit comic book at the time, but managed to find a few hours to put a few of designs together. And once we saw all that, the floodgates were open and I think Bruce [Timm] quickly realized that this is the way to go. Everyone was much happier and felt that it reflected the book. It was just a question of Darwyn's time and what kind of a commitment we could get from him. And in short work he turned around and designed our entire lead cast, our secondary cast, and then we had some really talented people who followed him and turned those models. So Darwyn would do a three-quarter and some attitudes and then someone would come along and draw the character from different angles for the animators to work off of.

As far as freedom and latitude in adapting it, I talked to Darwyn about it and we decided we didn't need to use shots directly out of the comic. We could feel free to just be filmmakers at this point and as long as we were trying to catch the mood and the essence of the sequence, that was what was important. But after we storyboarded a few sequences, I thought, let's try a little experiment and work in these panels directly out of the book and see how that plays. Then we realized from that point on that it was the way to go. It was the only true way to bring the book to life. And damn if Darwyn's compositions aren't fantastic to work around.

Q: Are you a big fan of the silver age?

A: I'm 36, so I grew up coming out of some of that and my Superman was the John Byrne Superman when I was starting to collect comics. I was really keen on some of the earlier comics like Curt Swan and some of the Ross Andrew. I would buy Superman comics that had Ross Andrew covers and get them home to discover Kurt Swan interiors. I was a little bit disappointed. But yeah, I love the silver age versions, but I was kind of keen to know them a little bit later in my years. I think they're probably the versions I most respect because they're purer. And tying into the nation's attitudes that time, I think they're the most optimistic. I'm kind of like that in that I'm always looking for the best in people and in situations.

Q: Well I can certainly understand that as a Superman fan.

A: He's the purest and noblest of them all, isn't he?

Q: I would have to agree with that, but it's become a detractor for him as well.

A: There are things I really appreciated about the latest theatrical release, but I was really disappointed to hear that they dropped the line, "truth, justice, all that stuff." There's nothing wrong with being an American for God sakes.
