February 28, 2008: Interview with “New Frontier” Voice Director Andrea Romano

Interview with Andrea Romano, Voice Director for Justice League: The New Frontier.

By Jeffrey Taylor

Q: You've cast Superman how many times now?

A: Many, many times because he appears in so many projects. We had the Superman: The Animated Series series first and then the Batman/Superman Hour with Tim Daly, then Justice League where George Newbern played him. Then Superman: Doomsday and then here. Also Batman Beyond for a couple of episodes. There's always this awesome responsibility because it's Superman. Everybody has an idea in their minds as to what he sounds like. Bruce [Timm]'s drawings are always so stylized and you can't use too thin a voice, but then when he's Clark Kent he has this vulnerability and believability. So I've got to find a good actor and he's got to be the type that fits those two categories, and then someone who fits in with the whole world that we're creating. We try to make sure that the other characters are coming from the same world.

Q: Did you cast Superman in The Batman?

A: That's right, Superman showed up in that series too. And that was a matter of, we got picked up to make more episodes on a Monday and in order to stay on schedule and deliver the shows that we do, we had to record it that Thursday. And to cast such iconic characters like Superman, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane in that time, I just couldn't do it. So I went back to George Newbern, Clancy Brown and Dana Delaney because they were wonderful. They were really good, and so why not bring them into this other world. Plus I didn't have time to do a full scale casting call. It doesn't matter to me if they're known actors or not as long as they have the right voice for the characters. If someone says, "That sounds like Superman," then I've done my job.

Q: I've been watching the original Superman: The Animated Series a lot lately and Clancy Brown is just a piece of perfect casting as Lex Luthor.

A: Clancy Brown actually came in to audition for the voice of Superman. As soon as he opened his mouth we thought, oh, "Clancy," I said, "can you read for Lex Luthor?" He said, "Am I ever going to get a chance to play a good guy?" He's just a natural for that part. His voice placement is so deep and he's such a fine actor.

Q: So when you were recording Justice League: The New Frontier, who among the actors really surprised you in their performances.

A: You know I had worked with Brooke Shields just about six months before this and I got a call from her agent saying Brooke is eight and a half months pregnant and she's interested in voiceover work. I brought her in for a small role and she was lovely and did a beautiful job. Then when this came around I thought of her. And she's just terrific. Not every on-camera actor transitions to the voiceover world well. Not everybody makes it, but she just got it. John Heard was also terrific and I believe it was his first voiceover gig. Nobody really surprised me though. They were all as good as I expected them to be.

Q: So what other projects are you working on right now that we're not supposed to know about.

A: *laughs*
