Superman Sweater

April 22, 2004: 1940s Superman Sweater Sells for US$1,747.00

I received an email last week from a lady by the name of Becky Lockerby. She had an old Superman sweater that she was looking to sell, and wondered if I knew how much it was worth. After emailing back and forth, we discovered that the sweater was from the 1940s and was a garment designed by designer Irvin Foster. Becky decided to list the garment on Ebay to see what kind of offers she would get... Little did she know the fevorish bidding this item would attract.

Last minute bidding saw the sweater sold at US$1,747.00

Here's how the item was described:

Offering a neat knitted 100% wool SUPERMAN SWEATER for a boy. Embroidered label has pic of superman, says SUPERMAN INC by IRVIN FOSTER. Not certain when Superman was created... If in late 30s then it belonged to my brother and was worn in mid 40s.

As it is wool, there are many small holes, broken yarn that can be easily repaired. The elbows were very poorly mended by my grandmother but can also be restored.

Measures 16" long, 12" across under arms, arms from neck to wrist are 18". Repeat Superman pattern is 5" high and 4" wide. Superman is red and blue on tan background. There are some light stains here and there...

The winning bidder was from Florida. Who said that a man in California has a catalog of designs made by Irvin Foster and felt this sweater was "a rare piece".
