Death of Superman

November 18, 2004: Muncie Symphony Orchestra to Perform 'Super' Concert

Before the season kicked off in September, the Muncie Symphony Orchestra's new Maestro Bridget-Michaele Reischl said she was most looking forward to the symphony's "Americana" show.

That show is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Ball State's Emens Auditorium.

"We are doing the Red Cape Tango, a really fun piece of music," she said at the time. "The composer is a big Superman freak. The piece is about Superman and his battle with one of the bad guys."

The composer, Michael Daugherty, is indeed big Superman fan and his Red Cape Tango is based on Superman's fight to the death with Doomsday. It's also Daugherty's final musical work based on the Superman mythology.

On his Web site, Daugherty says this "dance of death" is "conceived as a tango, presented at times like a concertino comprising string quintet, brass trio, bassoon, chimes, and castanets. The tango rhythm, introduced by the castanets and heard later in the finger cymbals, undergoes a gradual timbral transformation, concluding dramatically with crash cymbals, brake drum, and timpani."
