August 6, 2006: Wizard World Chicago 2006 - Day Three

By Barry Freiman

DAY THREE:

Today's highlight was the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Art Auction. It was co-hosted by "Smallville" Lois Lane, Erica Durance, and Jeph Loeb ("Superman/Batman", "Supergirl", "Superman For All Seasons"). Unfortunately for me, I didn't attend the auction but fortunately for you, I received reports from Superman Homepage members "Batmouse" and Mike Kelly who both attended.

The auction raised over $70,000 for the Fund created in memory of Sam Loeb (Jeph's son), who contributed the lead story in the issue (though other writers helped finish the comic after Sam's death). All of the original artwork for issue 26 of "Superman/Batman" was auctioned off.

Apparently, Durance only arrived at Chicago's O'Hare Airport around 1 PM leaving her little time to make it to the 2 PM auction. She then had to leave immediately following the auction to return to Vancouver - though she stayed as long as possible to pose for photographs with fans. Durance worked hard during the auction, running up and down aisles to show artwork to bidders. She also apparently jumped in the lap of at least one successful bidder. Both Batmouse and Mike praised Durance's efforts at the auction.

Speaking of Lois Lanes, the ever-lovely, oh-so-sweet Noel Neill posed for a beautiful photograph for me which you can see below. I love the image of Neill today juxtaposed with the poster of her and George Reeves behind her.

As I arrived and left for the day, artist Eric Michael Maruscak of Binghamton, New York, worked feverishly on his own brand of roadway improvement in the driveway outside the convention entrance. You can see the results below.

Once again, colleague Neal Bailey is staying in the hotel with no computer but I'm sure he'll chime in with a report tomorrow if only because he's the only one of the two of us who's going to be at the show tomorrow. If you see him at the convention, I'm sure he'd appreciate a comforting hug.

Finally, I want to thank Superman Homepage member Shalamarke for coming out to the show today just to see Neal and me. It's not the first time Shalamarke's come out from behind the keyboard to support the Superman Homepage at a public event and it's very much appreciated.
