October 2, 2006: Geoff Johns Talks “Action Comics”

Newsarama caught up with Geoff Johns to ask him about his up-coming run on "Action Comics", co-writing the "Last Son" arc with Richard Donner. Here's part of the interview...

"A rocket lands in Metropolis containing a boy that Superman thinks is from Krypton," Johns explained. "Along with figuring out that that means to him, everyone wants this kid now. He's become the most valuable kid on the planet. Lex Luthor has his sights on him, and has assembled his own team of villains to nab him, and things are setting up for a big action/mystery story surrounding this kid, and seeing where his future lies. Is he destined to become earth's new Superboy? Who knows?"

And yeah - Johns isn't writing Action with Donner with his head in the sand - he knows that currently, over in Batman, Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert are following down what may look to be a similar path, that is, Batman's biological son has recently appeared and is making dad's life a little rough. Coincidence, Johns said.

"Donner and I have actually had this story for about two years," Johns said. "We sat down and started breaking out story out, and then it was sometime after we'd written the first issue, we heard about what Grant was planning to do in Batman, and heard enough to know that ours was completely different, even though it touches on some of the same basic themes. We've both got good stories to tell - these characters are so iconic and have been around for so long, it's just a natural question to ask if they're every going to become fathers or father figures."
