Superman #650

January 10, 2006: Geoff Johns & Kurt Busiek Talk Superman “One Year Later”

Newsarama caught up with writers Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns to ask them about the first "One Year Later" (OYL) Superman story to be published directly after "Infinite Crisis" is over. The four-month, eight-part story arc will run through Action Comics #837-840 and the reconfigured Superman #650-653. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: What can you say specifically about the story arc? Geoff: Kurt, I tend to be more tight-lipped. What should we say?

Kurt: There will be bullets, locomotives, and tall buildings. Speed, powerfulness, and yes, multiple bounds. There may even be birds and planes, by the time we're through.

There will be new versions of old characters - a new Toyman, a new Kryptonite Man - and fresh takes on old stalwarts, like the more-annoying-than-he-ever-was Prankster. There'll be a host of super-powered ne'er-do-wells and brand-new villains like the mysterious and troublesome Flea Circus. There'll be the extraterrestrial event of 1938, guest-stars (including Green Lantern, Supergirl and Hawkgirl), a threat from the center of the Earth that shakes Metropolis to its foundations and the Avenue of Tomorrow.

Geoff: Yes. The Avenue of Tomorrow is one of my favorite new concepts to come to Metropolis. And the Flea Circus have a creepy connection to something quite bizarre. It's the classic Superman mythos and the modern mythos all sewn up together.

Kurt: There'll be fat lips and black eyes, carnage and fateful choices, firepower enough to shatter a world. There'll be danger in the skies and panic in the streets. There'll be quiet time for Clark and Lois, happy time for Perry White, media glare for Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen gets to kick a rock.
