Justice #5

April 19, 2006: Jim Krueger Talks Justice

Newarama grabbed an interview with Jim Krueger to ask him about how he and Alex Ross work together on the bi-monthly Justice 12-part story. Here's part of the interview...

Q: Let's hit the era itself - what, in your view, characterizes this era of the DCU? I mean, there are the obvious items - Superman and Lois are not married, etc... but tonally, how does this era of the DCU differ from what we have now?

A: I would say that it's more like a snapshot in timelessness rather than time. We're not trying to do an "era" of DC, but a story based on the characters that the world knows to be the heroes. This is less of an homage to the Silver Age and more of an attempt, one that's proved successful, to show that these characters - including Barry Allen and Hal Jordan - although, of course, he's back now anyhow, are viable and interesting characters.

And, of course, it differs from the current DC universe in many ways. In Justice, there was not an Infinite Crisis because there was no initial Crisis on Infinite Earths. This series ignores the notion of a changing ongoing mythology and focuses on the characters as if they did not have to change at all.

I mentioned earlier that I was writing these characters as if they were different than the Marvel characters, and this unchanging aspect is part of that. When I think about Marvel characters, I think about people with power who make the mistakes that people do whenever they're given power. As a result, Marvel characters have the freedom to F-up.

DC heroes, though, don't have that freedom. At least not the ones that I'm writing. While they can be fooled and tricked, part of writing these characters is coming up with ways to show how worthy they are of the power they were given.
