July 21, 2006: Donner Joins Johns on “Action Comics”

It has just been announced at the "Warner Bros. Home Video: Superman Through the Ages" panel at the San Diego Comic-Con that "Superman: The Movie" director Richard Donner will be joining Geoff Johns as co-writer on "Action Comics" starting in October.

Newsarama caught up with the pair and asked a few questions...

Q: Dick, has writing comic books been an long-unfulfilled ambition of yours? Or is it the opportunity to work with Geoff again? Or a chance to re-establish your relationship with Superman? Or all of the above? And whatever the response, why now, this moment in time?

Donner: It was the chance to work with Geoff. When it came up I thought "Wow. This could be a great highlight in my life." The learner becomes the master, the master becomes the learner. Doing it on a Superman title is icing on the cake.

Q: So, how did the project come about?

Johns: Dick has an original page of art from one of my books in his office. And one day I thought how cool would it be to have a page from a book we did together. So I said we should do a Superman comic and thanks to [editor] Matt Idelson it turned into a monthly book.

Q: Some general accounting questions - when does this run begin and for how long are current plans for it to last?

Johns: Action Comics #844. And we wanted Action Comics. It began with Action Comics. Currently, our run is open ended.

Q: Creatively, can you briefly describe how this works? Do each of your have a specific role? Do you share plotting and scripting duties?

Johns: Yeah. Dick and I sit down and brainstorm. We break the issue, write an outline then I script it, give it to him and we polish it up.
