Doomsday Omnibus

May 26, 2006: Dan Jurgens Talks Superman/Doomsday Omnibus

DC Comics is scheduled to release the "Superman/Doomsday Omnibus" next month, and The Pulse caught up with Dan Jurgens to talk about the volume and Superman in general...

Q: There's a huge Superman/Doomsday Omnibus tradepaperback coming out in June. The cover image is very striking, what do you think of it? How do you think that might attract the browsing eye?

DAN JURGENS: I believe that image was taken from a poster I did back when we first did Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey. It was always one of my favorites but I'm not sure that many people actually saw it. But I remember doing it while wanting a real tight focus to capture his ferocity. The torn cape was a bit of a take-off to the cover of Superman #75. It's a very simple, and easily understood image, which makes for quick communication on the stands.

Q: How did Doomsday change from when you first wrote him when he "killed" Superman to this collection? What was his evolution like and what caused it?

JURGENS: When we first introduced Doomsday, he was a more simple character. We thought of him as an unstoppable "force of nature". But that can only go so far, and as it became necessary to add a background and reason to reappear, more detail had to be added.

The idea of a character who could perpetually evolve to outlast his environment and foes is really kind of cool, imo. Seriously, if the Legion were to ever meet Doomsday, he should be a very different, perhaps even unrecognizable character, by then, given a series of changes over 1,000 years.

It's the theory of evolution condensed into a very small amount of time.
