April 14, 2006: New Team Back in Action

While we await word from DC Comics on who the new team will be taking over "Action Comics", a temporary new team is set to take on the title for three issues (#841-843).

Kurt Busiek (co-writer of the currently running "Up Up and Away!" arc in Superman and Action) and Fabian Nicieza will join with artist Pete Woods for "Back in ACTION," a storyline picking up after the events of "Up Up and Away!"

Newsarama caught up with Kurt and asked him about the stint on "Action Comics". Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: Will "Back in ACTION" be a direct continuation of the storyline from "Up, Up and Away!," or will this be a separate start to a new story?

    A: Yes.

"Back in ACTION" is a self-contained big action-adventure trilogy that stands on its own, but it also follows directly on the events of "Up, Up and Away!" Superman's back, and everything's great - except, well, the last time he vanished, he came back as four guys, and none of them turned out to be the real one. So the world's a little skeptical, and the government even more so. Is this really Superman, or is this a clever ruse? They hope it's him, but they can't be sure.

The action starts in -- well, it starts in Baltimore, of all places, but it spreads to New York, San Francisco, all around the globe, and even into outer space. Call it a big summer-action blockbuster, call it a nod to the days Action was a team-up book - whatever, it's Superman and some of DC's coolest heroes in all-out action against a towering threat.

See! Superman, Nightwing and Firestorm versus a dangerous alien threat in Manhattan! See! Superman and the Titans versus an even more dangerous alien threat over San Francisco Bay! See! Superman solo versus the Yet Still More Dangerous Alien Threat! And that's before we shift to outer space and ring in even more heroes and villains! What does it all have in common with being lost in the bowels of the New York Post Office, on a galactic scale? Who is "Ops"? What does it set up for both Action Comics' next arc, and the Superman book?

And what about Naomi? Uh, wait. Never mind about Naomi. Pete Woods, who's been doing a gorgeous job on "Up, Up and Away!" is sticking around for the art, and we've got the insanely great Dave "Dave" Gibbons doing fantastic covers. I hope DC's supplied the first, so we can show it off.
