November 29, 2010: Making Caramelized Apple Superman Pie

Superman Pie SequentialTart.com has posted a blog entry called "Justice Desserts: Superman" in which Erin Elizabeth Fraser combines her two loves... comic books and cooking, and sets to work making her own superhero recipe... Superman Pie!

The idea was hatched during a phone call one night after a cookie baking session at my place. Initially, I wasn't entirely sure what she was getting at, but she went on to explain: "We take the basic idea of Superman, or any superhero, and adapt that to dessert." What she was suggesting was a lot more complicated than decorating a cake; it was distilling a character down to their iconography and translating that to pastry. We quickly brainstormed other superheroes and decided, if we were going to go ahead with this project, we'd have to pick a focus. The Justice League was a natural fit, as was the title, Justice Desserts. So we decided to start baking our way through the Justice League, starting with our initial inspiration, Superman.

For us, Superman is the quintessential all-American superhero. He is the protector of the American dream and all that it represents. But for two Canadian girls, we aren't entirely sure what that means. What we do know is that no other dessert is more American than apple pie. It conjures up images of Fourth of July picnics and fireworks, even if we've never seen them ourselves. We chose to make a caramelized apple pie, because caramelizing the apples not only tastes amazing, but also it gives the pie structure, and we need it to stand up to the other accouterments.
