October 13, 2010: Superman Comic Thief Captured

Action Comics #11 UPI.com reports on an incident that took place at the recent New York Comic Con, where a thief tried to get away with snatching an issue of "Action Comics #11" (worth around US$4,000).

Matt Nelson, co-owner of Worldwide Comics in Texas said he was manning a booth with partner Stephen Ritter when two men approached and took two expensive comics, a $4,000 Action Comics No. 11 starring Superman from 1939, and an $11,000 copy of Whiz Comics No. 2 from 1940, which featured the first appearance of Captain Marvel, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Nelson said the pair then grabbed several other comics, valued at about $300 each, and walked off in different directions. The vendor said he followed one of the thieves, identified by police as Richard Turner, 40, and was able to recover the Superman comic with the help of other vendors.
