November 23, 2010: Cadmium, Lead Found in Superhero Glasses

10oz Superman Glass Warner Bros. has decided to recall a series of collectible drinking glasses, some depicting Superman, after the Associated Press published a report showing that they had been found to contain illegally high levels of lead and cadmium.

In a statement, Warner Bros. said it believes the products meet federal safety standards, but that the company will stop selling them immediately.

"While test results from an independent facility indicate that the D.C. Comics and 'The Wizard of Oz' glasses fall within the legal limits for product safety established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, we have elected to exercise an abundance of caution and remove the products from sale on wbshop.com and at our retail store here at Warner Bros. Studios," the company said.

The glassware was manufactured by Salt Lake City-based Vandor LLC. The Warner Bros. statement said Vandor is working on a full recall.

"At our request, the licensee who manufactured the glasses has elected to voluntarily recall these products and will be working with the [Consumer Product Safety Commission] to develop a recall plan."
