September 24, 2008: Northeast Ohio Volunteers Join National Day of Action

Volunteers from across Northeast Ohio will join forces to make a positive impact through community service on Saturday Sept. 27, 2008, which has been designated a nationwide Day of Action. The Glenville Development Corporation, the Siegel & Shuster Society and Hands On Northeast Ohio will host an expected 100 volunteers at 4 projects in Glenville. With the generous efforts of New York Times bestselling author, Brad Meltzer, The Book of Lies, funding has been raised through an on line art auction that will allow the group to begin restoration of the home of Superman creator, Jerry Siegel. The site of his teenaged partner, Joe Shuster will also get attention. As a special tribute to the 70th anniversary of the original release of the Superman comic book, each home on Kimberly Avenue will receive TLC including landscape improvements projects, minor repairs and painting. Volunteers will also be dispatched to paint seniors homes and the Charles Lake Elementary School in the Glenville community.

Bleick and Kessler is responsible for the Superman House restoration. Other materials and labor have been supplied by Home Depot, Behr Paint, Glidden Paint, Sherwin Williams, Bruder Inc, Goldstein Caldwell & Associates, and F.A.I.T.H. (Fathers Active IN THE HOOD).

ServiceNation is a campaign for an America in which, by 2020, 100 million citizens will volunteer time in schools, workplaces, and faith-based and community institutions each and every year (up from 61 million today), and that increasing numbers of Americans annually will voluntarily commit a year of their lives to national service. This September 27, across the nation, citizens and civic and political leaders will gather together to give testimonials on the power of service to transform lives and communities. Together we will redefine the meaning of civic engagement in this state and this country.
