Guess Whos Adopted

February 25, 2008: Book Preview: “Guess Who's Adopted?”

By Barry Freiman

"Guess Who's Adopted?" by Laura Kowalczyk Richards, BA, M. Ed., is a childrens' book about and for adopted children. The author is an adoptive mother who conceived of the book while playing a verbal game of guessing who else is adopted with her firstborn adopted daughter. Don't worry, you haven't mistakenly come to the wrong website - this is the Superman Homepage and there's a good reason this book is profiled here.

The book contains a series of biography pages of famous people who happen to be adopted. The profile pages are separated by quotes and inspirational words about adoption. Amidst profiles for politicians like Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, and Jesse Jackson, musicians like Faith Hill and Sarah McLachlan, actors like Jamie Foxx, athletes like Jim Palmer and Greg Louganis, entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Dave Thomas, and historical figures like George Washington Carver, there are two profiles of particular interest to fans of this website.

First up - fictional character Superman has his own profile page. Fittingly for a childrens' book, Superman is treated as real a person as anyone else in the book. Sure it's a bit sloppy to say that Superman's birthplace is Krypton and to say his birth name is Clark Kent when his Kryptonian birth name is Kal-El, but that's more nitpicky than anything else.

Second - the very next profile page after Superman's is for actor Dean Cain, who of course portrayed Superman on "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman". Cain's adoption story is retold alongside bits of trivia such as the fact that Dean was always an honor roll student, and his brief stint with the Buffalo Bills. Naturally, his claim to fame is listed as having played Superman on "L&C".

I am not adopted nor do I have an adopted child. Without the personal knowledge of what it's like to be part of an adoptive family, I think the book presents the material sensitively and proudly. I would imagine it to be a very lovely first book for young adopted children. Moreover any family interested in teaching the value of diversity to children will find the book an educational and entertaining resource.

Visit the book's official website or order the book from Amazon.com.
