April 1, 2008: Superman Items Sold in Hollywood Auction

On March 22 we reported that a George Reeves signed poster would be amongst a huge range of movie and television memorabilia going under the hammer at the "Profiles in History" $4 million auction. The auction is now over, and here are the prices that the Superman items sold for:

Mole Men Poster Superman and the Mole-Men one-sheet poster
(Lippert, 1951) George Reeves stars in his most famous role as the comic book superhero. This is the most collectible and desired Superman poster for a live action film, because of the fact that Reeves played Superman on the popular television show. This title also finds a home in most science-fiction collections because of the Mole-Men. A very popular and nostalgic one-sheet for any baby boomer, comic book fan, or sci-fi buff. Condition: A. On linen.

Hollywoodland Prop Prop Newspaper "TV'S SUPERMAN, OUT OF WORK, KILLS SELF" from Hollywoodland.
(Focus Features, 2006) Prop newspaper measuring 15.5 x 13.5 in. placed in a black matte and framed under glass. The frame measures 21.0 x 19.5 in. The headline "TV'S SUPERMAN, OUT OF WORK, KILLS SELF" was printed in the LA Daily News Tuesday, June 16, 1959 and the prop is a very faithful reproduction of the actual newspaper. Hollywoodland delves into the mystery surrounding the death of TV's "Superman" George Reeves and stars Ben Affleck, Diane Lane and Adrian Brody.

Small black and white photograph measuring 1.5 in. x 2.5 in. of actor George Reeves mounted on a cardboard card measuring 3 x 5 in. with his autograph in black ink to the right of the photo. George Reeves is best remembered for playing Superman in the famed television series. He was found dead due to a fatal gunshot wound in his home, and nearly 50 years later the circumstances of his death remain controversial.

Legend Returns Poster Legend Returns Poster Superman - The Legend Returns double-sided poster honoring Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, 1988
50th Anniversary Tribute Poster - Celebrating 50 years (in 1988) recognizing original creators, high schools buddies in Cleveland, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster on the occasion of Action Comics #1 June 1938 the famed publication that introduced Superman. The poster (18 in. x 37 in.) is in mint, rolled condition printed on thickly coated stock to allow for printing on both sides, an ingenious conceit with Clark Kent inside phone booth urgently ripping off street clothes with a small tribute panel to Siegel and Shuster at the bottom, and on the verso a spectacularly illustrated Superman taking flight in perfect, ultra-vivid comic book colors. Rare.
